Interpreting Maramures is a work that fuses documentary and portraiture
to document the remote area of Maramures, Romania.
Blending historical, topographical and religious elements, these shots combine costume, landscape
and Ceausescu era architecture to reveal the complex layers of history that define
both the environment and the people who live in it.
The decay of Communism blends with the folkloric nature of the woods and houses to provide an organic backdrop against which these struggling, but surviving customs rise up.

It is a struggle that has survived communism, war and countless pogroms
but will it survive the latest threats to its continuing existence
- consumerism, gaming and the rise of the internet.
